Overview of Grading in the Philippines

In most Philippine schools and universities, student performance is measured using a numerical grading system on a scale of 1 to 5, 60 to 100, or percentage equivalents, depending on the institution. Grades reflect how well a student has achieved learning outcomes in each subject.

General Weighted Average (GWA)

The General Weighted Average (GWA) is used to summarize a student’s overall academic performance across all subjects. It is calculated as follows:

GWA = (Σ (Grade × Units)) ÷ (Σ Units)

Where:

• Grade = numeric score of each subject
• Units = credit units for each subject

Academic Honors: Dean's List & President's List

Many Philippine universities recognize outstanding student performance through honors such as the Dean's List and President's List:

• Dean's List: Students with a General Weighted Average (GWA) typically between 1.00 and 1.75 (on a 1.00–5.00 scale) with no failing grades may be included on the Dean's List. This distinction is awarded per semester.
• President's List: This is usually the highest honor, often awarded to students with a perfect or near-perfect GWA (e.g., 1.00) and exemplary academic performance.

These honors encourage academic excellence and are recognized across most Philippine higher education institutions.
